Shivkumar Sharma was born on 13 January 1938 (Age 84 years old) in Jammu, British India (now Jammu and Kashmir, India). Sharma’s mother tongue is Dogri, and he was born in Jammu to vocalist Uma Dutt Sharma. When he was five years old, his father began teaching him vocals and tabla.

Shivkumar began studying the santoor at the age of thirteen, and in 1955, he gave his first public performance in Mumbai.

The santoor was popularized by Shivkumar. In 1956, he composed the soundtrack for one of Shantaram’s films, Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje. His debut solo album was released in 1960.

In 1967, he collaborated on Call of the Valley (1967), a concept album with flutist Hariprasad Chaurasia and guitarist Brij Bhushan Kabra which became one of Indian classical music’s biggest hits. He also collaborated with Hariprasad Chaurasia on music for many Hindi films, beginning with Silsila in 1980. The Shiv-Hari music combo became well-known. Faasle (1985), Chandni (1989), Lamhe (1991), and Darr (1991) were among the films for which they wrote music (1993).
